1. Do I really need to fix registry problems?
Absolutely! If you don't fix registry problems when they arise or try and prevent them from even happening at all, then you may soon find yourself faced with sudden crashes, system stalls, or a severe degradation in operating speed. Working to fix registry issues and prevent system crashes should be a top priority whether you use your computer for business or pleasure, and you'll find a greatly enhanced computing experience by doing so.
It is important to understand that trying to fix registry problems after they occur is always more difficult than preventing them in the first place, so prevention is always preferred over working to fix your registry after the fact. Regardless of how long you've owned your system or how it's used, there are many reasons why a Windows registry can become corrupted or littered with errors.
Some reasons why you may find that you need to fix registry issues include:
you frequently install or uninstall programs
you delete software that was never really fully "uninstalled"
you have embedded Spyware or third party programs that revive themselves with each boot
you have gone through a hardware install/uninstall
you have unused but undeleted drivers on your system
You probably won't notice a need to fix any registry problems if your system is new, but over time, your system's registry will become larger and larger, especially as software, drivers, and hardware components are added and removed from your computer. With so many additions and deletions, your Windows registry can become corrupted or filled with errors and empty destinations, and the need for you to fix registry problems would be paramount before they start to get worse.
For example, when you uninstall software, it is highly probably that remnants are still lurking in your hard drive or registry and without a good program to fix these registry issues, you'll be left with more seeds for imminent trouble.
2. Is my PC clean of registry problems?
Keeping a PC clean isn't easy with all of the different types of hardware, software and drivers available, so it's hard to say if your PC is clean without first analyzing your system's registry. Many find this an arduous and confusing task which is why more than 100,000 people each week turn to Registry Mechanic to keep their PC clean of registry problems or potential issues.
Keeping the registry of a PC clean of errors is critically important if you hope to prevent operating problems and boost system performance. Otherwise, you may find programs working slower than they should be, hardware performing at less than their potential, or your entire system crashing without warning.
If your PC is clean of registry errors then you will absolutely notice an end to slow, frozen, or unpredictable operation. In fact, if your system is already crashing or seizing for no apparent reason, then keeping your PC clean by fixing the registry and monitoring its activity may be the best solution.
With Registry Mechanic for Windows you can safely clean your PC and fix registry problems with just a few simple mouse clicks. To keep your PC clean, Registry Mechanic uses a high-performance detection algorithm to quickly identify missing and invalid references in your Windows registry.
Whether you need to keep your PC clean because of remnants being left behind after an uninstall or because you incorrectly removed software, have corrupted hardware drivers, or orphaned startup programs, Registry Mechanic can ensure that your PC stays clean and free from registry errors and system-slowing issues.
3. Can reg clean make a difference?
Reg Clean is actually a freeware utility from Microsoft that helps to repair a number of registry problems that are somewhat common to Microsoft products. While Reg Clean isn't nearly as thorough or useful as some proprietary solutions such as Registry Mechanic, it does serve the needs of millions of low-risk users.
Reg Clean works to analyze the structure and integrity of the Windows registry, and reg clean is best used to find registry keys that might contain incorrect or missing values. After reg clean records these entries in what is called an "UNDO.REG" file, it then removes the problematic entries from the Windows Registry.
Reg Clean is specifically designed to clear the Windows registry of errors and problems both safely and effectively. With the registry cleaned out, you will notice better overall performance and a shorter wait whenever you reboot the system. Reg Clean can absolutely make a difference to your system's health and operation, but it does have its limits when you consider compatibility, depth of analysis, and more. You can learn more by comparing reg clean to Registry Mechanic .
Far easier to use than reg clean, Registry Mechanic will scan your entire registry for any invalid entries and provide a list of the errors found after a few easy steps. You can then choose to selectively repair each item or automatically repair them all?something reg clean cannot provide. For your convenience and protection Registry Mechanic can also make a backup of any repairs made so that you can easily recover any changes if required.
Registry Mechanic is designed to scan for registry errors using a high-performance detection algorithm to quickly identify missing and invalid references in your Windows registry. As complex as all of this registry talk may sound, Registry Mechanic makes it easy and provides a simple and safe alternative to reg clean. While incredibly powerful and complete, it is extremely easy to use and it automates even the most complicated tasks.
4. RegClean or Registry Mechanic...what's the difference?
Even with its benefits and free download distribution, RegClean isn't without its disadvantages. First, RegClean is not compatible with all Microsoft products, third party software programs, spyware components, drivers, preferences, and hardware entries.
Second, RegClean doesn't fix all known problems within a registry and it's generally limited to fixing problems located in "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT". This limits the overall effectiveness of RegClean because certain troublesome components won't be recognized, cleaned, or deleted.
Third, RegClean cannot fix a corrupt registry so if your system is plagued with a number of problems then it is highly possible that RegClean will not be able to correct the issues you are having.
Finally, RegClean will leave any entries in the Windows Registry that it couldn't understand or correct, which does little to help offset the problems you are having.
This isn't to say that RegClean is without merit. On the contrary, it's a powerful and free tool offered by Microsoft to help remedy a number of registry problems. However, sometimes a computer user's problems go deeper than RegClean can probe. To offset these limitations of RegClean, we highly recommend that you download Registry Mechanic for Windows , which is dedicated to helping you safely clean and repair Windows registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks.
Like RegClean in theory, Registry Mechanic actually goes several steps beyond by using a high-performance detection algorithm to quickly identify missing and invalid references within your Windows registry.
Registry Mechanic Feature Highlights:
Repairs invalid registry entries that are a common cause of Windows crashes and error messages
Increases system speed and stability by removing orphaned references
Scans your hard drive for invalid and incorrect program shortcuts
Safely makes backups of any registry change made by Registry Mechanic
User-friendly and easy to use with many automated tasks
Works with Windows XP, Me, 98, 95, NT and 2000
Unlimited free upgrades and e-mail technical support for one year
5. Can a regcleaner help me?
With a regcleaner you will be able to get rid of problematic and obsolete registry entries created by software and drivers that you either uninstalled or deleted incorrectly in the past. You won't have to be an expert to use a regcleaner so don't worry about any limitation of computer knowledge.
While a big advantage of a regcleaner is its ability to fix registry problems, an even bigger benefit is that a quality regcleaner can prevent problems from arising in the first place. Regardless of how long you've owned your system or how it's used, there are many reasons why a regcleaner would need to be used to repair a corrupted or error-prone Windows registry.
Some reasons why you may find that you need to use a regcleaner include:
you frequently install or uninstall programs
you delete software that was never really fully "uninstalled"
you have embedded Spyware or third party programs that revive themselves with each boot
you have gone through a hardware install/uninstall
you have unused but undeleted drivers on your system
With so many changes occurring as you use your computer, your Windows registry can become corrupted or filled with errors and empty destinations. If this occurs, then a regcleaner may be needed to fix registry problems before they get worse.
Whenever you uninstall software, it is highly probably that remnants of the software are still lurking in your hard drive or registry and without a good regcleaner available to fix registry issues, you'll be left with imminent trouble.
6. Keeping your registry clean - some basic tips
Keeping a registry clean can be a somewhat difficult task which is why even experienced computer users opt to keep their registry clean through the use of software specifically designed for this purpose. But why? Does it really matter? Is a clean registry really that important? And if so, what can one do to keep his or her Windows registry clean of bugs, errors and harmful problems?
Before you can make your registry clean of errors or problems, it's important to first understand what a Windows registry is and what it does. Essentially, the Windows registry is a database that stores your system information and settings for the hardware, software, and general preferences used on your Windows machine. Ideally, keeping a registry clean isn't an issue because Windows' built-in registry tools tend to work in the background so that your system's integrity is protected. However, because the registry is so huge and complicated, and because it gets more convoluted every time changes are made, it can develop problems that cause strange behaviors or even bring down your entire system.
If you keep your registry clean of problems, conflicts and errors, then your system's performance will be greatly enhanced. However, if your registry becomes bogged down because of uninstalled software programs, orphaned startup tasks, corrupted drivers, or more, then you'll begin to notice a significant slowdown in speed. In addition, if you fail to keep your registry clean then you will almost certainly see a flurry of sudden crashes as your PC becomes more and more unstable.

7. Registry Cleaners and Tools
Registry cleaners are designed to keep your Windows registry in excellent working condition so that your system operates at peak performance. There are dozens of different registry cleaners and tools available for use with the registry, some of which are discussed below.
Registry Editor - An effective registry cleaner?
Registry Editor comes standard with your Windows installation and is sometimes used as a registry cleaner even though it does have its limitations. This program will allow you to make typical changes to the registry. While grouped within registry cleaners, cleaning the registry through this method can become quite tedious. You can add and remove keys and values, change values, or export entire branches of the Registry to a REG file and also import this file later. While the Registry Editor isn't considered to be among the more thorough registry cleaners, it is still a powerful tool capable of handling most jobs related to registry repair and management.
Registry Cleaners or Registry Checker?
Registry Checker comes installed with Windows 98 and this is quite a useful registry cleaner for repairing the Windows Registry. Primarily, the Registry Checker can handle the following:
Backs up and restores the Registry
Scans and fixes a variety of Registry errors
Optimizes unused space in the Registry
Unlike most registry cleaners, Windows 98 actually starts Registry Checker every time you boot the system, at which time it backs up the Registry to what are called "CAB files" (compressed archive files). It is also useful for registry cleaning tasks because it also scans the Registry for errors. If it finds any registry errors then Windows 98 will restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and run Registry Checker to repair the file or restore the backup copy of the Registry. While not as thorough as most registry cleaners, it can be enough for light system users.
RegClean as a Registry Cleaner
Reg Clean is actually a freeware utility from Microsoft that helps to repair a number of registry problems that are somewhat common to Microsoft products. While Reg Clean isn't nearly as thorough or useful as some proprietary registry cleaners such as Registry Mechanic, it does serve the needs of millions of low-risk users. Click here to learn more about RegClean and how it compares to other registry cleaners.
Registry Cleaners vs. The Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit
Microsoft's Windows 98 Resource Kit comes with three MS-DOS registry cleaners and utilities that aren't available on the standard Windows 98 CD-ROM. There is also a resource kit for Microsoft Windows 95, which provides similar registry cleaning utilities. The program will enable you to compare branches from two different stored registries and then list the differences so that you can locate potential discrepancies and errors. Compared to most registry cleaners, it's a bit awkward for registry repair, but it also provides a number of additional functions. For example, you can query, add, update, delete, copy, save, back up, restore, load, and unload keys and values. You can also search for keys, value names, and value data in the Windows Registry. While not ideal for registry cleaning and repair, it does display the values so that you can work to determine the next course of action.
Registry Mechanic - one of the most popular registry cleaners available
With Registry Mechanic for Windows you can safely clean and repair Windows registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks! With this complete registry cleaner solution you can easily fix and prevent problems with the Windows registry that are often the root of sudden crashes, error messages, and performance degradation.

9. Registry Repair Components
Understanding the tools behind registry repair can help you determine the best course of action if you are having registry problems or system issues. If registry repair is paramount and you don't have the time, experience or patience to work through your registry's issues manually, you may want to consider a registry repair tool such as Registry Mechanic, which is specifically designed to analyze and repair registry issues.
Understanding the Windows Registry
Your system's registry is a central database used to store information necessary to configure the system for preferences, applications, and hardware components. Registry repair and preventative maintenance is important because the registry contains information that is constantly referred to by the system during operation. The more preferences, software applications, drivers, and hardware components that are installed on the computer, the more complex the registry becomes. Registry repair becomes critical when this registry becomes corrupted or littered with keys no longer relevant to your system. The Windows registry is a vital part of Windows and if it is damaged then your whole system may be corrupted.
A Quick Look at Registry Repair Tools
There is a wide range of tools available that can help you repair or work with your system's registry. One of the more important registry repair tools is a registry editor, which you can use to change values in the registry. There is a Registry Editor that comes with Windows, or you can use a third-party registry program such as Registry Mechanic.
Registry repair tools like Registry Mechanic include applications that help you fix the registry after it gets messed up, but they can also help prevent problems from occurring. While Registry Mechanic is designed for registry repair and fixes a wide range of common Registry problems, RegClean (free from Microsoft) is designed to repair registry problems specific to several Microsoft products.
